EL HIPODROMO A TRAVES DE LA HISTORIA - Sultanes, Fiestas y Edificios (1524 – 1620)

Desde el período de Kanuni Sultan Suleyman (1520 – 1566), conocido en Occidente como Solimán el Magnífico) en adelante, Atmeydani sirvió de anfitrión a una serie de festividades. Conocidas como "Sur-i Humayun", estas fiestas fueron organizadas para las ceremonias de circuncisión de los Príncipes (Shehzade) y las bodas de las hijas del sultán. Entre ellas, la fiesta de 1582, organizada para el Príncipe Mehmed III, hijo de Murad III, son las más magníficas. La Mezquita Azul, construida por Ahmed I en 1620, proporcionó una nueva apariencia a Atmeydani.

Canciones de Navidad (Villancicos)

Los villancicos tienen su origen en canciones de poemas cortesanos amorosos que a lo largo de los siglos XV y XVI se presentaban en los salones de los grandes nobles. Más tarde fueron conocidos como "canciones de villanos”, la denominación “villanos” se daba a los habitantes de las villas, para diferenciarlos de los nobles o hidalgos y fueron interpretadas por trovadores en las calles. Antes de denominarse villancicos, recibieron también los nombres de "villancejos" o "villancetes". El tema del villancico casi nunca tenía que ver con la Navidad. Había villancicos de temática religiosa, aunque predominaban los profanos. Estos tenían el carácter marcado de las canciones pueblerinas: vivos, irónicos e incluso picarescos.

Durante el siglo XVII, los compositores de música interpretada en las capillas e iglesias, musicalizaron canciones religiosas para que fueran cantadas en las festividades religiosas. Pero las que más gustaban y recordaban los fieles eran las compuestas para las fiestas de Navidad, eran alegres, sencillas y compasivas. En la actualidad, al hablar de villancicos se refieren solamente a estas canciones que recrean algún pasaje o poema navideño.

El Leño de Navidad

El leño de Nochebuena podría tener origen en las festividades del solsticio de invierno y frecuentemente se ha asociado con orígenes paganos germánicos. Esta tradición se encuentra en Inglaterra, Francia, países eslavos del sur, Alemania central y oeste de Suiza. En Italia (Tosca) existe la “Festa di Ceppo” (Fiesta del leño).
En Nochebuena, desde hace varios siglos se tenia por práctica, hacer quemar en el hogar un leño muy grande que debía consumirse muy lentamente; lo ideal es que ardiera durante los doce días del ciclo. Se elegía, preferiblemente, un tronco de árbol frutal, lo que suponía garantizar una buena cosecha para el año siguiente. Antes de encenderlo, se bendecía el leño con la ayuda de una rama de boj, o de laurel, que se había conservado del Domingo de Ramos. En algunas regiones, mientras que el leño se iba consumiendo lentamente, se rociaba de vino con el fin de garantizar una buena vendimia, o de sal para protegerse de las brujas. A menudo, se conservaban los rescoldos para preservar la casa de los rayos.
La desaparición de hogares con grandes chimeneas puso fin a la tradición de los leños que se quemaban y no se conoce la fecha de nacimiento del postre que los sustituyó. Algunos sitúan su creación en 1945 y dicen que fue un “pastelero” el que creó este pastel navideño. Pero merece la pena mencionar que el rulo circular de Noel ya era tradicional, en la región Poitou-Charentes, en el siglo XIX.

LA BEFANA – Bruja que regala dulces, regalos y carbón

Según cuenta la leyenda, los Reyes Magos, de camino a Belén para llevar sus regalos al Niño Jesús, al no conseguir encontrar el camino correcto, pidieron ayuda a una anciana. A pesar de la insistencia de éstos para que les siguiese en su visita al pequeño, la mujer no salió de casa para acompañarlos.

Más tarde, al arrepentirse de no haber ido con ellos y tras preparar un cesto con dulces, salió de casa pero no consiguió encontrarlos. Por esta razón se paró en cada casa que encontraba a lo largo del camino, dando chucherías a los niños que encontraba, con la esperanza de que alguno de ellos fuese el pequeño Jesús. Desde entonces vagaría por el mundo haciendo regalos a todos los niños para hacerse perdonar.

La Befana pertenece a las figuras folclóricas, repartidoras de regalos, vinculadas a las festividades navideñas. Es una típica figura del folclore de algunas partes de Italia. Su nombre deriva de la palabra epifanía ("manifestación"), a cuya festividad religiosa está unida la figura de la Befana.

A menudo la Befana es descrita como una anciana, que vuela sobre una escoba. A diferencia de una bruja suele estar sonriente y tiene una bolsa o un saco lleno de dulces, regalos, pero también de carbón.

El mito sostiene que la Befana visita a los niños la noche anterior a la epifanía, el 6 de enero para ser precisos, y rellena los calcetines colgados a tal fin. Si han sido buenos la Befana los rellenará con caramelos y chocolatinas, en cambio si han sido malos rellena los calcetines de carbón (el carbón es un dulce de color y forma parecida al mineral). Para cumplir con la tradición en algunas casas los niños le dejan una mandarina o un poco de sopa de judías, tipo “minestrone”, con la esperanza de encontrar caramelos en sus calcetines y no un pedazo de carbón.

La distribución de regalos a los niños en nombre de la Befana fue fuertemente animada por el Fascismo, en el ámbito de la obra de "romanización" de la península italiana.

La fiesta de la Befana puede derivar de antiguos elementos folclóricos pre-cristianos, adoptados y adaptados por la tradición cristiana. Una hipótesis sugerente es la que vincula la Befana con una fiesta romana, que se desarrollaba al comienzo del año en honor de Jano (dios de las puertas) y de Strenia (de la que deriva el término "estreno"), durante la cual se intercambiaban regalos.
