En Escandinavia durante los tiempos paganos el pueblo creía que los gnomos protegían sus casas del mal. Uno es el inventor de la maquina de juguetes, otro el más viejo amigo de Santa Claus y co-ordenador del pueblo secreto en Lapland, está el diseñador del trineo de Papá Noel y encargado del buen funcionamiento de este que también se ocupa del cuidado de los renos, además se encuentra el guardián del lugar donde se halla el pueblo secreto de Papá Noel, no hay que olvidar a la directora de los dulces y asistente de la esposa de Papá Noel, la señora Claus y no hay que olvidar al administrador de la lista de los niños y niñas buenas. Sus nombres cambian según los libros.
